California Here We Come!
Well it looks like we will definitely be packing our bags for California! Jackson will be playing on two teams; the 6u Mudcats, and the 8u Stallions. The Mudcats are a team of 6u kids specifically put together for the San Jose NARCH tournament The Stallions are an existing team composed of 8u kids that have been together most of this season. They are the upper level 8u team who usually play in 10u tier 1 tournaments.
Originally Jackson was invited to play on just the Mudcats however, because of roster problems on the Stallions, Jackson was recently invited to play with them as well.
Last Friday was Jackson's first experience playing with the Stallions at the CET Sports Arena in Colorado Springs. They competed in a NARCH qualifying - 10u - Tier 1 tournament and ended the day in 2nd place with a silver medal (this is definetly a higher level of hockey than he is used to). He had a blast!
He will be training with both teams in Colorado Springs up until we leave for California. Needless to say, both boys are extremely excited for the trip. Hopefully we get some time outside of hockey to get a little site seeing in. This will also be the first time either of the boys will fly in a plane and the first time they will actually get to see the ocean. They are psyched!!!

Westminster Avalanche Head to Championship Undefeated but Skate Away With Silver
Game One: With
an assist from Hunter Stone, Jackson Cornett Struck early in the first period
setting the stage for what looked like a sure win over the Littleton Flames. As the period went on and the two teams battled
back and forth, the Avs were unable to take advantage of two separate power
play opportunities. As the Avs continued
the fight, Chase Mcgee was charged with a 2 minute hooking minor penalty which weakened
the Avs defense and allowed the flames to jump back into the game. In spite of
Ryan Proctors 5 saves, and 7 more shots on goal by the Avs, the first period
ends with the Avs down by one.
Early in the
second period, Cameron Valdivia of the Flames snuck one by Ryan Proctor leaving
the Avs at a 3-1 deficit.
The Avs didn’t back down. After five more shots on goal by the Avs, Hunter Stone, with an assist from Jackson Cornett, slides the puck between the legs of Trevor Zimmer bringing the Avs to within one goal. With 1
minute remaining, and the Avs down by one, Ryan Proctor
was pulled from the net to give the Avs an offensive boost. This proved to be successful and with only 10
seconds left in the game, Jackson Cornett assists Mason Proctor who beats the
buzzer and hurls one in the net forcing the game into overtime.
Just minutes into
overtime, with an assist from Jackson Cornett, Jaden Cornett clinched the game with a
bullet in the net giving the Avs
a 4-3 victory over the flames.
Game Two: Jackson Cornett slammed one in (unassisted)
early in the first period sending a loud and clear message to the Pueblo
Phantoms that the Avs did not intend on going home empty handed. Just moments later, Jaden Cornett, with an
assist from Jackson Cornett reiterated the message with another rocket into the
Phantom net. After a little volley with
the puck, the message was once again delivered as Hunter Stone assists Jaden
Cornett allowing him his second goal of the game. Mason Proctor, Chase Mcgee, Jamie Beckstein,
and goalie Ryan Proctor created a defense that the Phantoms were not equipped
to penetrate. Late in the first period,
Jamie Beckstein was charged with a tripping penalty and sent on vacation for
two minutes giving the Phantoms hopes of a comeback. Those hopes were immediately crushed as
Hunter Stone once again assists Jaden Cornett for his first ever tournament
hat-trick.
During the second
period, the Avs had no intentions of letting up. They dominated every aspect of the game
denying the Phantom any opportunity of turning things around. Veterans Chris Poirier and Jamie Beckstein
gave the Phantoms a lesson on speed and agility as Mason Proctor and Chase
Mcgee showed them how to play defense.
In the final moments of the second period, Hunter Stone drives the puck
in unassisted giving the Avs their second win of the Day. With the Avs dominating Shots on Goal 26 to
13 and Ryan Proctor racking up 11 saves, The Avs finish the Phantoms with a 5 to
2 win.
Game Three: After a short break, the undefeated Avalanche
prepare to battle the undefeated Colorado Springs Lightning in a game that
will determine the championship seeding.
The Avs came on
heavy from the puck drop and immediately dominated the Lightning zone. With the lightning unable to control the
puck, the Avs bombard the lightning net with shots on goal but soon realized
that the Lightning net was a force to be reckoned with. Shot after shot after shot, the Lightning
goalie shut down the Avs offense. With a
tiring Lightning defense, 3 back to back power plays were awarded to the Avs yet
the inside of the Lightning net remained sacred territory. The first period
ended scoreless with a frustrated Avs offense and a tired Lightning defense.
The second period
continued in the same manner as the first with the Avs dominating the Lightning
zone and the Lightning unable to take charge of the puck. Halfway through the
second period, Jaden Cornett with an assist from Jackson Cornett found the door
and hammered one past the Lightning goalie allowing the Avs to finally take a
lead on the score board. With little
time remaining, the Avs focused on defense keeping two back deep in their own
zone to help protect the net. In the
end, the Avs managed to rack up 26 to 8 shots on goal and shut out the Lightning
1 to 0 guaranteeing them a spot in the championship game and a chance for gold.
Championship Game: With the Pueblo Phantoms leaving empty handed
and the Littleton Flames clinching the bronze, the undefeated Avalanche once
again face the Colorado Springs Lightning in a battle for the gold.
Hunger for gold ensued
on both sides of the red line as the puck dropped at 9:45pm Saturday night. After some brief back and forth in the first,
the Lightning struck first with a breakaway goal from Kristopher Fish catching
the Avs defense and Ryan Proctor off guard. The Avs appeared unaffected and managed to
take back control of the puck keeping the action in the Lightning zone. Once again, the Avs pelted shot after shot at
the Lightning net but the puck could not find its way in. The inability to find the back of the Lightning
net allowed frustration to set in and as the Avs defense attempted to assist
the offense, two back to back breakaway goals were made for the Lightning. Down 3 to 0, in the middle of the first
period, the Avs responded sending Chris Poirer deep in the Lightning zone and
with an assist by Mason Proctor and Jamie Beckstein, Poirer blasted the puck in
the net finally putting the Avs on the board. This fueled a rally for the Avs and moments
later, Hunter Stone (assisted by Jaden Cornett) also found the back of the net bringing
the score at the end of the first period 3 to 2.
With only a one
goal deficit, the Avs had high hopes for a comeback in the second period. These hopes soon faded after they were
charged with two back to back penalties leaving them at one point with only two skaters and Ryan Proctor on the rink. The Lightning seized
the opportunity and pounded in two more goals in spite of Jackson Cornett’s
aggressive defense and breakaway shot on goal. The Avs could not overcome the set back and eventually
relinquished their grip on the gold to the Lightning. The Avs take home silver after a 5 to 2 loss
to the Lightning but hit the road smiling knowing they were the strongest team
in the tournament. Way to go Avalanche!
